1

Person & assumptions

Enter values at the assumed date of death, rather than values today.

The transferable percentages are for a previously deceased spouse or civil partner. A living spouse's allowances are not combined in this single-death calculation. Earlier gifts reduce the available standard nil-rate band here; any separate tax on gifts is outside this illustration.

2

Assets at death

Enter the deceased person's share. For property, enter equity after its mortgage.

AssetDescriptionValue at deathPassing to
Where an asset is split between beneficiaries, add separate rows for the respective shares. “Direct descendants” means the children, grandchildren or other qualifying descendants to whom the home passes.
3

Pensions & death benefits

Enter the amount payable on death for a lump sum or guarantee, not a DB transfer value or the premium used to buy an annuity.

Benefit typeScheme / descriptionValue or annual incomePassing to

For a DB or annuity guarantee, use the scheme or provider's estimated value of the remaining guaranteed death benefit. Survivor pensions and qualifying joint-life annuities are shown as annual income only, outside the IHT estate estimate. Check the actual scheme terms before using a result.

Show calculation breakdown

This is a single-death IHT estimate using the £325,000 standard band, £175,000 residence band and 40% rate in both columns; future thresholds or rates could change. It assumes the listed pensions would have been outside the estate under the earlier discretionary-benefit rules; a pre-2027 non-discretionary arrangement may differ. It does not calculate a surviving spouse's later estate, inherited-pension income tax, the lump sum and death benefit allowance, tax on lifetime gifts, reliefs for business or agricultural property, or the 36% charitable rate. Verify all results before advising or publishing them to clients.
