Potential allowances
These questions help us provide a more meaningful illustration.
If a spouse or civil partner has previously died, some or all of their unused allowances may potentially be transferable. Leave these at 0% if this does not apply or you are unsure.
From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be brought within an individual's estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. This could increase both the value of the taxable estate and, for larger estates, affect the availability of the Residence Nil-Rate Band.
This calculator provides a simplified illustration only. It is not a full Inheritance Tax calculation and does not constitute tax, legal or financial advice. Your actual Inheritance Tax position will depend on your individual circumstances and the legislation in force at the time.
The calculation does not make allowance for all exemptions, reliefs or planning considerations. These may include lifetime gifts, charitable gifts, trusts, Business Relief, Agricultural Property Relief, downsizing provisions, gifts from normal expenditure out of income or other reliefs and exemptions.
The Residence Nil-Rate Band is subject to qualifying conditions and may be reduced for estates exceeding £2 million. Any transferred allowances from a deceased spouse or civil partner will depend upon the circumstances applying to their estate.
Pension rules from 6 April 2027 are shown on the basis of legislation and guidance available at the time this calculator was produced. Pension death benefits can be complex and the treatment shown here is necessarily simplified.
